How to convert Fahrenheit to Celsius
°C = (°F − 32) × 5/9
To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit reading, then multiply by 5/9. Subtracting 32 first lines up the freezing points of the two scales (32°F = 0°C); the 5/9 factor then rescales the size of each degree.
Quick estimate: subtract 30 and halve the result. For 70°F: (70 − 30) ÷ 2 = 20°C (exact answer 21.1°C).
Worked examples
- Convert 98.6°F (body temperature): 98.6 − 32 = 66.6; 66.6 × 5/9 = 37°C
- Convert 72°F (room temperature): 72 − 32 = 40; 40 × 5/9 = 22.2°C
- Convert 32°F: 32 − 32 = 0; 0 × 5/9 = 0°C (freezing point)

Frequently asked questions
What is 70 degrees Fahrenheit in Celsius?
70°F equals 21.1°C - comfortable room temperature.
What is 100 degrees Fahrenheit in Celsius?
100°F equals 37.8°C. As a body temperature it is just below the 100.4°F (38°C) fever threshold; as weather it is a genuinely hot day.
Why does the formula subtract 32 first?
Because the scales are offset: water freezes at 32°F but 0°C. Removing the offset first lets the 5/9 ratio convert the degree sizes correctly.
