How to convert Celsius to Rankine
°R = (°C + 273.15) × 9/5
Rankine is the absolute temperature scale built on Fahrenheit-sized degrees: 0 °R sits at absolute zero, just like Kelvin, but each Rankine degree equals one Fahrenheit degree instead of one Celsius degree. To convert Celsius to Rankine, first shift to an absolute scale by adding 273.15, then multiply by 9/5 to switch to Fahrenheit-sized units.
Rankine survives mainly in US thermodynamics and aerospace engineering, where formulas need absolute temperatures but teams work in Fahrenheit conventions.
Worked examples
- Convert 25°C: (25 + 273.15) = 298.15; 298.15 × 9/5 = 536.67 °R
- Convert 0°C: (0 + 273.15) × 9/5 = 491.67 °R (water freezes)
- Convert 100°C: (100 + 273.15) × 9/5 = 671.67 °R (water boils)
