How to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit
°F = (°C × 9/5) + 32
To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply the Celsius temperature by 9/5 (that is, by 1.8) and add 32. The two scales place their zero points differently - 0°C is water’s freezing point while 0°F was the coldest brine mixture Daniel Fahrenheit could reproduce - and a Fahrenheit degree is only 5/9 the size of a Celsius degree.
A handy mental shortcut: double the Celsius value, subtract 10%, then add 32. For 20°C: 40 − 4 + 32 = 68°F, exactly right.
Worked examples
- Convert 20°C: 20 × 9/5 = 36; 36 + 32 = 68°F
- Convert 37°C (body temperature): 37 × 9/5 = 66.6; 66.6 + 32 = 98.6°F
- Convert -10°C: -10 × 9/5 = -18; -18 + 32 = 14°F

Frequently asked questions
What is 25 degrees Celsius in Fahrenheit?
25°C equals 77°F - A warm, pleasant room or a mild summer day.
When are Celsius and Fahrenheit equal?
At -40. It is the single point where -40°C = -40°F, because the two scales converge there.
What is the fastest way to estimate °C to °F in my head?
Double the Celsius number and add 30. It lands within a few degrees for everyday temperatures (exact method: double it, subtract 10%, add 32).
