In August, Costa Rica is a land of contrasts, where rain showers and sunshine play a delicate dance. I’ve learned that this month falls squarely in the rainy season, locally known as “Green Season.” Yet, don’t let that deter you; mornings often greet us with clear skies and vibrant sun, perfect for exploring. By afternoon, though, clouds usually roll in, delivering refreshing showers that transform the landscape into a lush, verdant paradise.

Temperatures during this time are pleasantly warm, hovering around 27°C (80°F) in coastal areas, making beach visits and water activities utterly enjoyable. Up in the mountains, it’s cooler, with averages around 18°C (64°F), ideal for hiking and experiencing the cloud forests.

Rainfall patterns vary significantly across regions. On the Caribbean coast, for instance, August can be surprisingly dry, offering a unique window to enjoy its laid-back beaches and rich Afro-Caribbean culture without the usual downpours. Conversely, the Pacific coast and central regions receive more frequent rains, nurturing the rainforests and making waterfalls swell with beauty.

So, packing for Costa Rica in August means preparing for both sun and rain. Lightweight clothing, waterproof gear, and a sense of adventure are essential. Despite the rain, or perhaps because of it, this month showcases the country’s natural splendor in full force, making it a captivating time to visit.
